TaughtMe – “Am I Old?”

TaughtMe’s new album, “Am I Old?”, has been carefully crafted for 5 years by Blake Henderson, a San Francisco-based singer-songwriter and producer, and turns out as his most introspective to date.

TaughtMe had already released 3 full-length albums over the past decade, as well as a split EP with Uzi & Ari. His work is characterized by a raw human-ness and dramatic urgency. Henderson is also a producer, working out of his studio in the Bay area, California.

The new album “Am I Old?” is TaughtMe’s first since 2008’s “Lady” on Own Records, which received laudatory comparisons to Talk Talk, David Sylvian, Will Oldham, Björk, or Sigur Rós in Les Inrockuptibles, Trebleine, Textura, Neon Vegan, Autres Directions“Am I Old?” is self-released and available on all digital platforms (Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify, Deezer…) since August 31.

“I didn’t intend to build a collection of brooding monologues. I had even planned to avoid first-person pronouns altogether, imagining instead sonorous landscapes that flirt mindlessly beyond the ego. So I was quite troubled when “Am I Old?” and “The Kids” arrived: clearly human, undeniably egocentric. But they felt right! Gradually, as other tunes surfaced, I accepted that I was composing soliloquies and chose to own the fact rather than temper it. I then named the collection “Am I Old?” and decided to decorate the album with a single person toppling over. “Am I Old?” is my rawest album and my best try so far to get real deep.” – Blake Henderson

We hope you’ll enjoy the inner voyage!

PUZZLE MUTESON (UK, Bedroom Community)

Newly signed to Iceland’s Bedroom Community, Puzzle Muteson is an enigmatic songwriter from the Isle of Wight, rendering his music in a tremulous tenor over a finely spun web of fingerpicked guitar. After obsessively listening to his raw tapes, Valgeir Sigurðsson and Nico Muhly nurtured the songs that now inhabit his debut recording, titled En Garde. The album will be released on June 6 in Europe, and June 7 worldwide.

RACH THREE (FR)

Rach Three is a folk/ambient project from Paris with a raw and delicate rib. Depending on the time and weather, Rach Three’s guitar and voice intertwine with an occasional clarinet, trumpet, singing saw, drums and piano. His first record “3 songs for Claire +2” has just been released last month.

THOMAS MERY (FR, Own Records)

On “Les couleurs, les ombres“, his second solo album out May 31st on Own records, Thomas Mery keeps exploring the paths of his latest EP, again with a little help from his former Purr mates (Jérôme Lorichon, now in The Berg Sans Nipple, and Stéphane Bouvier, now touring with Yann Tiersen and Nestor Is Bianca). Now mainly singing in his native French, Thomas deconstructs the codes of folk music and chanson, filters everyday-life impulses through the more volatile matter of dreams, creating songs that allow the daring listener to penetrate an intimate and singular world, where Nick Drake and Dominique A meet Tarkovski and Antonioni.

New Year’s Label Interview: Own Records

Own Records New Year's InterviewLUXEMBOURG-BASED OWN RECORDS, ALREADY RESPONSIBLE FOR INTRODUCING EUROPEAN AUDIENCES TO THE EVOCATIVE SOUNDS OF GREGOR SAMSA, UZI & ARI, OR TAUGHT ME OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, HAVE HAD THEIR BUSIEST YEAR SO FAR. NO LESS THAN 6 ALBUMS WERE RELEASED IN 2009, MOST OF THEM BY ARTISTS WE HAD BARELY HEARD OF A YEAR AGO: SQUARES ON BOTH SIDES, TROUBLE BOOKS, CHARGE GROUP, TALONS’, FIREKITES, AND THE GREEN KINGDOM. AFTER ERASED TAPES AND BELLA UNION, UNKNOWN-SOUND-TREASURE-HUNTER HELIO CAMACHO FROM OWN IS 3RD IN OUR NEW YEAR’S LABEL INTERVIEW SERIES.

A) Which records released in 2009 do you wish you had released on the label?

Martin Herterich - Silent FieldsHélio: We really cannot complain, since we released all the records that we wanted to and that we could possibly release in 2009. We would not have had the time and energy to release any 7th record. But if I had to pick one record, I think I would choose “Silent Fields” by Martin Herterich on Kalligrammofon/KESHHHHHH.

B) Which artist you wish you had signed will you keep an ear on in 2010?

Mombi, who aren’t much known yet… (Captn’s note: very little information to satisfy our curiosity indeed on this Denver, Colorado band)

C) What are you the most proud of for the label in 2009?

We have succeeded in releasing 6 records that we are proud of. No matter their style, they all have a kind of common aesthetic which will sound obvious to the “sensitive souls”

“Autumn Story” by Firekites, from “The Bowery – Chalk animation by Lucinda Schreiber.

D) What are the label’s challenges for 2010?

Chihei Hatakeyama - Ghostly Garden 5Own Records, Feb 2010)Go on releasing records that move us despite of our busy schedule, starting with Chihei Hatakeyama in February.
